What Defines Sustainable Wallet Brands
Local Sourcing in Ethiopia: We source leather from Ethiopian farmers who raise animals for food, stimulating the local economy. This also means Parker Clay leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, which minimizes waste — especially compared to companies that raise animals for leather production.
Sustainability Every Step of the Way: We work to ensure sustainable practices in every aspect of our supply chain and creation of goods— from sourcing leather from animals raised for food until the moment your item lands in your hands.
Production: We use eco-friendly practices throughout production. This includes using gentle dyes, eco-friendly chemicals, and recycled water. Our processes are also all done by hand, rather than by machine. These practices all come together to protect the planet, our workers, and you, our loyal customers, from harsh waste, pollution, and other harmful chemicals.
In Your Hands: Our commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop after production. We ship all our products in recyclable cardboard, so you can rest assured you keep harmful plastic shipping materials out of landfills. We also protect each item in an organic cotton bag that you can reuse to store your item.
Support for Artisans: Parker Clay’s commitment to sustainability also means a commitment to fair trade and ethical support for all of our artisans. We provide living wages for our artisans — many of who are women who have been impacted by human trafficking — but we believe that benefits should go above and beyond that. We provide our artisans with transportation, coffee breaks, education, and other benefits to support their families. Many companies may label themselves as “sustainable brands.” They may claim to use “eco-friendly materials” like “vegan leather.” But what does that mean? Without true transparency, some companies are, unfortunately, only greenwashing — acting as sustainable without changing their practices. And sadly, many “vegan leather wallets” and other products are really just made with harmful plastics — like polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) — that let off emissions during production
They also don’t stand the test of time and will end up in landfills after a year or two. At Parker Clay, we’re committed to handcrafting processes, sourcing natural leather that’s a byproduct of the leather industry, and shipping sustainably.
